An annual review of your Medicare Supplement coverage prevents surprises and identifies better value.
Key Points
- Review your Medicare Supplement coverage and premium each year.
- Medigap premiums can rise over time; compare renewals against alternatives.
- Because benefits are standardized by letter, compare premiums across carriers.
- A life event that lowers income can trigger an IRMAA redetermination.
What to do after you're enrolled in Medicare
Once you're enrolled, the most valuable habit is an annual review. A short annual check can prevent surprises and identify better options.
Review your Medicare Supplement coverage each year
Medigap premiums can change over time. Each year, review your renewal premium and compare it against other Medigap plans and carriers to see whether a different plan or carrier may offer better value.
Compare your renewal premium
Because Medigap benefits are standardized by letter, the same plan from a different carrier gives you identical coverage. Comparing premiums for your plan letter across carriers in your county is the most important cost-saving step.
Check whether a different plan letter fits better
If your current plan no longer fits your use, a different letter plan may offer better value. Plan G offers broad coverage; Plan N offers a lower premium with small copays; High Deductible Plan G offers a lower premium with a higher deductible.
Understand your guaranteed-issue rights
Certain life events give you a guaranteed-issue right to buy a Medigap plan without medical underwriting. Knowing when these rights apply helps you switch at the best time.
Watch IRMAA if your income changes
Part B premiums are income-based. If a life event lowers your income (retirement, divorce, reduced work), request a Life-Changing Event IRMAA redetermination from Social Security.
