Key Takeaways

  • •PlanRight is the final expense line: a whole life policy with guaranteed level premiums and guaranteed cash values, intended to cover funeral costs and other final expenses.
  • •PlanRight is issued in three versions: Preferred and Standard pay the full death benefit from the start, and Basic has a limited death benefit in the first two years — the premiums paid plus 10% annual interest — with the full face amount from year three. An accidental death in the first two years is paid at 100% of the face amount.
  • •It is underwritten on a non-medical, simplified-issue basis: there are no paramedical exams or fluid collection, and insurability depends on answers to medical and other application questions and underwriting review.
  • •The company publishes term, whole life (including a children's policy), universal life and a separate accidental death term insurance product.

Life-Insurance Options to Compare

Term life insurance

Coverage for a set period, paying a death benefit only if death occurs during the term. It builds no cash value.

Whole life insurance (PlanRight)

Permanent final expense coverage with a guaranteed level premium, guaranteed cash values and lifetime death benefit protection. It is issued in three versions: two pay the full death benefit from the start and one has a limited death benefit in the first two years.

Universal life insurance

Permanent coverage with flexible premiums and cash value, subject to policy charges that can reduce the value.

Accidental death term insurance (Prepared II)

Coverage that pays only when death results from an accident, as the policy defines it.

Children's whole life insurance (BrightFuture)

A small permanent policy on a child, often bought so coverage can be continued later.

These are the product lines the insurance carrier publishes. This is an overview, not an offer or a policy illustration — actual terms, availability and eligibility come from the issuing company and the policy itself.

What to Consider

PlanRight (whole life)

The Basic version has a limited death benefit in the first two years: the premiums paid plus 10% annual interest. A death from an accident in that period is paid at 100% of the face amount, and from year three the full face amount applies as the policy provides, subject to the exclusions and limitations stated in the policy. The two versions that pay in full from the start have no such period, and the versions also differ in their maximum face amount.

PlanRight (whole life)

The brochure states plainly that PlanRight does not specifically cover funeral goods or services and may not cover the entire cost of a funeral at the time of death, though the beneficiary may use the proceeds for any purpose unless otherwise directed.

Universal life insurance

Flexible premiums can be reduced, but policy charges continue. Underfunding a universal life policy can erode its cash value and cause it to lapse, and illustrated values are not guaranteed.

Term life insurance

Coverage lasts for the selected term; renewal or conversion options depend on the policy.

Accidental death insurance

This is a narrow benefit. A death that does not meet the policy's definition of accidental is not covered.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Foresters PlanRight?

It is the company's whole life final expense product, underwritten on a simplified-issue basis, with guaranteed level premiums and guaranteed cash values, and issued in three versions.

Do final expense policies have a waiting period?

With PlanRight it depends on the version. Preferred and Standard pay the full death benefit from the start; Basic has a limited death benefit in the first two years — the premiums paid plus 10% annual interest — and pays the full face amount from year three. An accidental death in the first two years is paid at 100% of the face amount. Your certificate governs the terms.

Is accidental death insurance the same as life insurance?

No. Accidental death coverage pays only for a death that meets the policy's definition of accidental, so it is narrower than a standard life insurance death benefit.
